Candle History
From Roman times to the modern day
The Ancient Roman Empire left their stylistic mark on history for all to see and revere for centuries to come. One of the most significant ways they stamped their style was through the invention of the wicked candle. They made their candles from a natural resource called tallow.
During the middle age, another sustainable resource Beeswax was introduced for making candles.
Then as little as 160 years ago, a shadow fell over the candle industry. That shadow was the dark cloud of sooty smoke produced by paraffin wax.
Paraffin is the byproduct of the petroleum oil refining industry. There are 11 known toxins in Paraffin, two of which are documented carcinogens.
Today there are many vegetable wax candles on the market. But like almost all products, the different brands will vary in quality and purity.
Some being producing as cheaply as possible at the unfortunate expense of the healthier, eco-friendly trend they are claiming to represent.
To us, the whole point of natural candles is to be PURE AND NATURAL. Some of the soy and palm wax candles out there will still contain a large portion of paraffin and the fragrances will contain chemical irritants. It's a shame that in today's world profit is more important than the health of the consumers.
Handy Hint: You can often ascertain the purity of a candle by how well it keeps. If the fragrance starts to go bad within a month or two that's a good sign there are impurities. In the hot summer months, keep your favourite soy candles in a cool place like the fridge to preserve their shelf life.
